Norwegian First Secretary Visit

Mr. Inge Harald Vognild, first Secretary of the Royal Norwegian Embassy (RNE), Nepal and Mr. Ivar T. Jorgensen, Senior Advisor, NORAD visited the REDD Cell on February 17, 2012. They were accompanied by Dr. Bhaskar Karki from ICIMOD and Mr. Bibek Chapagain from RNE, Nepal. Mr. Resham Dangi, Joint Secretary and Chief of REDD Cell welcome the delegates and shared the REDD+ initiatives in Nepal.

Regional REDD Orientation Training for officers held in Surkhet, Nepal

Five day long training on “REDD Orientation for Officers” was held at Surkhet from Magh2 5-29, 2068 (February 08-12, 2012). This training event was sponsored by the REDD cell under the Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation and implemented by Regional Training center, Surkhet as per the approved annual programme of fiscal year 2068/69. This training was conducted for five days to build capacity on climate change and REDD plus for frontline managers and development activists working in forestry sectors in Mid Western Development Region of Nepal.

New Secretary Visited the REDD-Cell for Official Briefing

On February 8, 2012 the new Secretary for the Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation Mr. Naveen Kumar Ghimire visited the REDD Cell with high ranking officials for an official briefing. Mr. Resham Dangi, Joint Secretary and Chief of REDD Cell welcomed him on behalf of the REDD Cell and made a brief presentation on the status of the REDD readiness process. In his presentation, Mr. Dangi briefed them about the road map of REDD+, explained about the opportunities and challenges in REDD + readiness in Nepal. He concluded his presentation with remarks that REDD process is behind its proposed plan, but the REDD Cell is striving to achieve the REDD readiness target by 2014. Mr. Dangi requested the secretary for his kind consideration in few immediate actions from the Ministry that would be instrumental in expediting the REDD process in Nepal. After the presentation, the Secretary raised concerns about the staffing, the progress status, the organizational continuity of the cell, and its future activities.

REDD Orientation workshops organized in Eastern, Central and Western Development Region

REDD Forestry and Climate Change Cell with kind support of Regional Forests Directorates had organized REDD orientation workshops on 11th, 18th and 25th of January 2012 at Eastern, Central and western Development Regions respectively. The workshops were held at Biratnagar, Birgunj and Pokhara of respective Regional Directorate of Forests. Objective of this workshop was to share the latest developments on REDD+ at international and national level and building common understanding on on-going REDD-plus readiness process in Nepal.

Pakistani Delegates Visit REDD Cell

Official delegates from Pakistan led by Mr. Aurangzeb Ashraf Awan, AIGF with nine high level officials recently visited REDD cell on January 17, 2012. REDD Strategy Framework workshop held in Nepalganj

REDD Forestry and Climate Change Cell of the Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation organized a workshop on Sharing the REDD Strategy framework in Nepalgunj on 18-19 Poush 2068 (January 2-3, 2012) with kind support of Regional Directors from the Mid Western and Far Western Regional Directorates of Forests. Objective of the workshop was to discuss on the potential issues to be addressed in the proposed REDD strategy framework of Nepal. 30 participants representing line agency, user organization, project, NGO and media personnel participated in this workshop.
